About two hours earlier, I had walked out of my hotel to buy ice to keep our drinking water cool in the brutal August heat. A salesman caught me eyeing his ice blocks and called me over. A few metres to his left stood another wooden three-wheeled trolley, also stacked with ice. That trolley was too heavy for one child to push, so there were three of them, boys somewhere between ten and thirteen years old. The ice seller noticed my attention drift toward the boys and glared at them. The middle brother whispered to his older brother, “Straighten your back and puff out your chest, so you look bigger.” He must have thought that an extra inch on his brother would be enough to fend off the older sellers.

Their small piece of theatre made me laugh, the first time in days, so I bought half a cube of ice from them, a block about a foot square. I spent a few minutes bantering with the middle brother while the eldest cut the ice. The youngest stood listening, in awe that his middle brother could chat so easily with a stranger from out of town.

After the bombing, I stood there helpless, looking at that limb. The distinctive checkered sleeve of his shirt was still wrapped around it. It was a bloodbath. I was surrounded by the dead and the wounded; people were screaming, others crying out for the people they loved. Everyone around me was lifting the injured into cars to drive them to hospital. Bobby and Yuri were helping too. And yet I stood there, motionless. I could not bring myself to go and lift that limb. I stood for many minutes just looking at what was left of that little boy, and of his brothers. I was trying to convince myself that the children must have survived, against everything my eyes were telling me.

An old, frail man in traditional farmer’s clothes stepped into me, blocking my view, and muttered something I didn’t catch.

“Pardon me?” I said.

“Has the Ayatollah survived?” he repeated.

Without thinking, I answered, “Yes.”

I gave that old man the very same false hope I was forcing on myself about the boys. He kissed me on both cheeks. “God bless you,” he said, his eyes shining. As he moved away, I saw two men gathering up what remained of the children.

“Meitham!” I heard my name. Bobby had come looking for me.

The man who killed those boys belonged to a group called Tawhid wal-Jihad, led by Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. The faction was so extreme that even al-Qaeda regarded it as fanatical, and it would later evolve into what the world came to know as the Islamic State. Its fighters were Salafi-jihadis, a violent fringe of a broader revivalist current that drew on the eighteenth-century teachings of Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab. Most Muslims, of course, want nothing to do with this ideology, and many of its victims came from within their own communities. But the men of these jihadi cells were recognisable on sight: the short thobe cut above the ankle, the long untrimmed beard, the shaved moustache. They were the uniforms of a movement that tore through Iraq killing anyone it could, including, again and again, fellow Muslims.

When the shock of that day finally settled, I phoned my mother. Her heart already knew I had been in Najaf, but I pretended I was safe in a hotel in Baghdad, to spare her. The faces of those boys never left me. Their deaths fuelled a rage in me, and a hatred for the men who had done this. I studied these groups, and eventually I infiltrated them. I changed my name to Haitham. I retrained my accent to the dialect of Mosul. I rewrote my biography into that of a former Saddam’s loyalist. I did whatever I needed to do to gain their trust, to map their networks, to understand their reach and their weaknesses. My hatred for them was without limit, and I was willing to pass what I learned to anyone with a score to settle: Iraqis, Americans, even rival factions of their own.

I became an expert on the teachings of the group's spiritual founder, Abu Muhammad al-Maqdisi, a Palestinian cleric whose writings shaped a generation of jihadi thought. I read what they read. I learned the texts they cited, the rulings they leaned on, the language they used among themselves. When the 7/7 bombings tore through London in July 2005, I was the first to locate the bombers' statement.

There comes a point when hatred has taken so much of your life that you have to walk away from it, or lose yourself in it. I walked away. I relocated to the United Kingdom. I married the love of my life and started a family of my own, leaving the bearded monsters behind me.

Rather than backing the nurse, the trust pursued her. It took the intervention of the Christian Legal Centre to drop the case, and sustained media pressure before the trust apologised and reinstated her.

Conservative MPs from neighbouring boroughs such as Rebecca Paul MP and Claire Coutinho MP gathered outside the hospital with supporters in solidarity. One person was conspicuously absent: Catherine Gray, the Sutton Conservative councillor for St Helier West, the ward in which St Helier Hospital stands. The nurse worked on her patch, and the press were there, but Catherine was not.

Gray took St Helier West from Labour at the 2 May 2024 by-election, winning by just six votes over the Liberal Democrats — 1,342 to 1,336, with Labour pushed into third on 682. Six votes is the margin between being the councillor for that hospital and not. Six votes is also the margin of accountability that voters in St Helier West hold over her — and that is worth remembering this week.

Cllr Gray is not an obscure backbencher. She is among the most vocal supporters of Stonewall on Sutton Council—a Liberal Democrat-run borough whose professional services have been captured by a cult of gender ideology. Gray is more vocal on gender ideology than any other councillor in the borough, and arguably more so than any other resident. She also has a pattern of inserting herself in cases well outside her formal remit.

In September 2024, a Stonewall Champion and drama teacher at a local school was promoted to Designated Safeguarding Lead. Within few weeks, Catherine Gray held a meeting at the school to discuss removing a child from the care of his family and into the orbit of Stonewall-aligned support. Neither the child nor the school were in Gray’s ward, and the meeting was held without the family’s knowledge.

Social workers’ assessment was that no action was needed. Gray was unhappy with that response and escalated directly to the director of Sutton’s children’s services, describing the child in the same terms she uses for the director: “a member of the LGBT community”. Despite holding no formal role in children’s services, Gray was looped into ongoing case discussions as if she were part of the safeguarding team in clear violation of GDPR.

Sutton is run by the Liberal Democrats, but they too appear unwilling to challenge Gray, presumably because doing so would upset a constituency they cannot afford to lose.

Her biography is relevant only in so far as it illuminates the pattern. Catherine Gray grew up in a household with two fathers. One sat on the board of the LGBT Switchboard helpline and later died of AIDS; she has posted publicly about getting on better with her father’s husband than with her own parents. Plenty of councillors have personal histories that shape their politics. The criticism is of the political loyalty those histories appear to command when two loyalties collide. Gray’s frequent fundraising for Stonewall, and her unusual access inside Sutton’s children’s services, look less like coincidence and more like a pipeline.

When the choice was between standing on the pavement outside her own hospital in support of a constituent, and staying home to avoid being seen to take a position against a trans-identifying patient, she stayed home. Even when that patient was a convicted paedophile. A councillor who will not cross the road to support a nurse on her own patch because doing so might put her on the wrong side of an activist group she has spent years aligning herself with.

Sutton votes this week, and voters in St Helier West are entitled to ask a simple question: whose side is their councillor on when it matters? The answer, the first time it was tested in public, was not theirs. It is also worth remembering how this ideology reached our public bodies in the first place. The DEI architecture that now captures schools, councils and NHS trusts was rolled out across government under the Conservatives, and councillors like Catherine Gray have used their positions to entrench it, even where it means cleaving families apart or abandoning a constituent on the steps of her own hospital. A party that built this machine, and a councillor who still operates it, have not earned the benefit of the doubt. They have certainly not earned another day in office.

The latest Department of Education RSHE guidance told schools not to teach children that gender ideology is a fact, but rather a contested belief:

“The contested theory of gender identity will not be taught and the guidance confirms copyright law should not be a barrier to sharing curriculum materials with parents – with the updated curriculum open for an eight week consultation from today (16 May).”

This does not sit well with gender activists, like Steve Duffy of Harris Academy Sutton, an openly gay teacher and a Stonewall Champion. The law says teachers are not allowed to tell children this, but the law does not stop a school from inviting someone from outside to tell children this. Effectively, this offshores the task to a third party and gives teachers a degree of plausible deniability. The school remains legally responsible, but blame becomes harder to attribute when the words came from an outside organisation rather than the teacher directly.

This is where LGBTQ organisations come into play, such as Stonewall, Gender Intelligence, and Free2B. Jill Foster’s investigation for the Telegraph covers Gender Intelligence’s reach across schools, the NHS and sport in detail, including running events for “trans children” where attendees ranged in age from eight to 25, and delivering training in primary schools that critics say lacks adequate safeguarding protocols.

Free2B is a less well-known organisation, yet it is well funded and deeply embedded in the children’s services of two London boroughs: Wandsworth and Sutton. Two Free2B board directors are Mark Holliday and Andrea McDermott, both employed by Wandsworth children’s services. The relationship with Sutton is less visible, though the founder of Free2B, Lucie Brooke, is a director of a not-for-profit business offering SEND services for children, registered from within Sutton Civic Centre. Some Free2B workers are employed by Sutton, such as Zariyan Syed, a trans man who recently raised funds for breast removal surgery.

Sutton is one of the most pro LGBT boroughs in London. Senior figures include the director of Children Services Jonathan William and the head of IRO, LADO, Foster Care and recruitment Michael Radley, both from the LGBTQ community.

Although the Free2B website says LGBT, their materials and their work focus mostly on trans people, mainly children, much like Mermaids.

The Free2B volunteer page says: “We welcome applications from LGBTQ+ individuals as well as allies. To best reflect our current membership we are particularly keen to receive applications from transfemme individuals.”

The most concerning part is the showering guide for children which advises:

1. Bathe in the dark

2. Cover the mirror

3. Use a washcloth

4. Bathe with parts of your clothes on

5. Bathe in exercise clothes

The guide is dangerous on multiple levels. Practically, walking in a dark bathroom risks injury. But the deeper concern is what it teaches children about their own bodies: to hide from mirrors, to bathe in darkness, to keep themselves covered even while washing. That is not hygiene advice. It encourages children to dissociate from and conceal their bodies, a pattern more commonly associated with psychological harm than with safeguarding.

The washing guide is not the only concern. Free2B runs The Gap, a weekly LGBTQ youth club in Clapham Junction, open to young people aged 13 to 19, extended to 25 for those with disabilities. The club distributes free condoms at sessions. Mixing 13-year-olds with young adults up to age 25 in a sexualised context, where condoms are handed out, raises serious questions about safeguarding that the school should have considered before referring any child to Free2B programmes.

Back to Harris Academy Sutton and their Designated Safeguarding Lead. I came across a family whose child was placed in the Free2B programme without consulting the family. When the parents found out and objected, the school retrospectively sought consent, which the parents refused. The DSL went ahead anyway and enrolled the child without the parents’ knowledge. The Stonewall Champion teacher went further and tried to get the child to attend Free2B venues at Katherine Low Settlement by Clapham Junction, all without the parents’ knowledge and despite an explicit refusal of consent.

Enrolling a child in an external programme after parents have explicitly refused consent is a breach of parental rights and a serious failure of safeguarding procedure. The DSL role exists to protect children, not to advance an ideology that serves the teacher’s own lifestyle and political interests.

But Couzens was not an anomaly. He was the latest chapter in a long, shameful history of professionals who abused their authority while complaints were dismissed, warnings ignored, and victims silenced.

Consider Jimmy Savile. For decades, the BBC’s golden boy operated behind a facade of respectability while preying on the vulnerable. Warnings were given. Complaints were made. Yet the corporation looked away, protecting its star rather than his victims. One former BBC director who attempted to raise the alarm was simply ignored. It took until after Savile’s death for the full horror to emerge: one of Britain’s most prolific sexual predators had hidden in plain sight, shielded by the very institution that should have exposed him.

Or take the horrors of Mid Staffordshire Hospital, where between 400 and 1,200 patients died unnecessarily between 1996 and 2008. The warning signs were there. Helen Donnelly, an A&E nurse, raised concerns about poor care in 2007 and was met with hostility—colleagues warned her to “watch her back”. Chris Turner, a junior doctor, described the department as “an absolute disaster” and “immune to the sound of pain.” He complained repeatedly to managers. Nothing happened.

Consultant physician Peter Daggett also raised concerns over several years. He too was ignored. Meanwhile, patients lay in soiled sheets, unwashed and unfed, so dehydrated they drank from flower vases. The trust board remained deaf, obsessed with hitting waiting-time targets and achieving foundation status. When Julie Bailey founded the patient pressure group “Cure the NHS” after her mother died in terrible circumstances, the trust dismissed them. It took years of campaigning by grieving families to expose what should have been obvious to anyone willing to look.

Then there is Rotherham, where more than 1,400 children were sexually abused between 1997 and 2013. Police didn’t merely fail to act—they actively chose not to. A senior officer admitted that his force ignored the abuse of girls by Pakistani grooming gangs because it feared increasing “racial tensions”. One chief inspector told a missing child’s distraught father that the town “would erupt” if it became known that Asian men were routinely having sex with underage white girls. The officer allegedly described the abuse using racist slurs and said: “With it being Asians, we can’t afford for this to be coming out”.

For decades, police forces across the north and Midlands denied that concerns about community sensitivities influenced their failure to tackle grooming gangs. The IOPC’s investigation proved otherwise. Children were failed not by accident, but by design—sacrificed on the altar of political correctness and institutional cowardice.

Take Stephen Ireland, the charismatic founder of Pride in Surrey. For years, he was celebrated as a local hero, a champion of inclusion, a trusted voice in the community. He ran a helpline for vulnerable young people. He advised councils. He was given access to children.

And when Rebecca Paul—then a Surrey County councillor, now a Conservative MP—raised concerns in 2021 about a “deeply concerning photo” of Ireland with a child, what happened? She was met with an informal complaint against her by council officers. She was asked to stop communicating with staff on equality and diversity matters. Within two weeks, she was removed from her EDI portfolio.

The alarm had been raised. The system’s response? Shoot the messenger.

Ireland was finally convicted in 2025 of raping a 12-year-old boy and multiple other child sexual offences, receiving a 24-year sentence. But by then, the damage was done. And the question remains: how many warnings were dismissed, how many voices were muted, before justice finally caught up?

This is not an isolated story. It is a pattern.

And let us not forget Gosport War Memorial Hospital, where 456 patients died after being given dangerous levels of opiates between 1987 and 2001. Families raised alarms. They were fobbed off. Police investigations came and went without charges. Even now, more than two decades later, families are still fighting for justice as fresh inquests are ordered.

These are not isolated failures. They reveal a pattern as predictable as it is pernicious: when professionals are granted authority without accountability, when institutions prioritise reputation over truth, when complaints are treated as inconveniences rather than warnings—disaster follows.

Why does this happen? Partly because challenging authority feels unnatural. The Stanley Milgram experiments at Yale in the 1960s demonstrated that ordinary people will comply with authority figures even when instructed to do harm. In Britain, this is compounded by cultural reserve. We don’t make scenes. We don’t question those in uniform. We trust the system.

That trust is necessary—most professionals are conscientious, many go far beyond their duties. But institutions are not abstract entities; they are collections of fallible human beings. The badge does not sanctify the wearer. The title does not erase the capacity for evil or incompetence.

Every profession operates within boundaries. Police officers have powers defined by law. Doctors have duties to their patients. Teachers have responsibilities to their students. These boundaries are known as remit. When professionals operate beyond them without accountability, the system rots. Sometimes it is bureaucratic incompetence. Sometimes ideological overreach. Sometimes criminality.

The lesson is brutal but clear: institutions are only as trustworthy as the accountability that surrounds them. And that accountability cannot reside solely with oversight bodies or internal investigations, which too often resemble guilds protecting their own. It must also reside with the citizen.

Respectfully questioning authority is not an act of subversion; it is a civic duty. Asking for identification, demanding the legal basis for a stop, requesting documentation—these are not hostile gestures. They are reasonable checks on power. A professional acting within the law should welcome transparency; it is only those operating in the shadows who fear the light.

Sarah Everard should have arrived home that night. Her death forced a national reckoning. But the broader imperative extends beyond the Met. Authority must never be immune from scrutiny. Professionals deserve respect, but respect should not demand silence.

The families of Mid Staffordshire learned this lesson through grief. The children of Rotherham learned it through trauma. The victims of Savile learned it through betrayal. Their suffering was not merely the result of individual evil, but of systems that chose comfort over courage, reputation over truth.

The ability to challenge decisions and demand accountability is not a threat to the state. It is the only thing that keeps the state worthy of our trust. When authority is never questioned, it becomes dangerous. When it is responsibly challenged, it becomes strong.

Trust, but verify. Respect, but question. Because the uniform should protect the innocent—not shield the guilty.

As a father, I’ll be submitting my own letter. And I encourage every parent, especially every father, who has words of love, hope, warning, or wisdom for their son to do the same.

Our voices matter. Our love matters. And our sons deserve to hear it.

When I scroll through photos on my phone and find one of you, I pause. I let my eyes trace your face, your eyes, your smile… and for a moment, time stands still. Nothing fills my heart more than seeing you happy.

I’ll never forget the day I came home from a long work trip to the U.S. I’d forgotten my keys and knocked softly on our door in Wimbledon. When it opened, there you were, just a few months past your first birthday, barely walking a week, and your face lit up with that unmistakable beam only a child gives their parent. I dropped everything and pulled you into my arms, holding you so tightly while tears streamed down my face. I was heartbroken I’d missed your first steps. That moment changed everything for me. I left my consulting job soon after, any career that took me away from you just wasn’t worth it. From then on, I wanted nothing more than to be there for you. You became my world, my sweet, spoiled boy.

Jasim, I love you more than anything on this earth. If I could, I’d move mountains, or burn them down, just to spend one more minute with you.

I’ve always told you I could never be the “best” father, because that title belongs to my own dad, who I lost over 27 years ago but whose words still guide me every day. I named you after him because I hoped to carry his kindness, strength, and love into your life. I tried with everything I tried to be the second-best dad in the world. That you’re not with me right now isn’t your fault. It’s mine alone. And I carry that weight every day.

There’s something I’ve never said to you before: the struggles you’re facing now, the confusion, the questions, the pain, I’ve been through them too, at your age. But I was lucky. I grew up in a different time where family values mattered, friends who stood by me, and mentors who helped pull me back from the edge. You deserve that same support. And I promise you: none of this is your fault. You’re a child. And every child makes mistakes—some more than others—but that’s how we learn. You are still learning, and you are so deeply loved, exactly as you are.

Please stay strong, my son. Don’t let fear or confusion or the wrong voices in your head define you. Trust your heart. Think carefully. Question what doesn’t feel right. And always remember: no matter what happens, no matter what anyone says, I will always, always love you.

I’ve promised your mum and your sisters that we will be reunited. And I’ve promised your grandfather whose name you proudly carry, that I will never, ever stop fighting for you. A father who abandons his son doesn’t deserve to breathe the same air. And I will never abandon you.

Yet a review of Mr. Palmer’s public social media activity raises serious questions about judgment, appropriateness, and the boundaries of professional conduct for someone in such a position of trust.

Public Posts That Contradict Safeguarding Values

In one post made from within a government building during a House of Commons event, he shared content that appeared to sexualise a male police officer—a behaviour colloquially described as “toilet cruising.”:

One would expect a person in charge of multiple academies, of safeguarding thousands of children in his care to be exemplarily, yet Mr Palmer talks publicly about not asking men their names before proceeding to engage in sex with them.

A Matter of Standards, Not Identity

Let’s be clear, this is not an attack on Mr. Palmer’s sexuality. LGBTQ+ individuals, like everyone else, are entitled to dignity, privacy, and equal rights under the Equality Act and the European Convention on Human Rights.

But rights come with responsibilities—especially for those in positions of authority over children.

To illustrate: would a female school staff be permitted to remain in a safeguarding role if she posted a photo of herself wearing a novelty vagina on her head, joked publicly about masturbation, or referenced sexual fantasies involving Macaulay Culkin—a former child actor best known for Home Alone? In nearly all comparable cases, such behaviour would likely result in disciplinary action or removal from a safeguarding position. Professional boundaries exist precisely to protect children, not to police identity.

Yet there appears to be a striking double standard: behaviour that would likely end the career of a heterosexual educator is met with silence, or even tacit endorsement, when it comes from someone like Alan Palmer.

Safeguarding Cannot Be Optional

The stakes are high. Harris Federation schools serve some of the most vulnerable children in England. Many students have experienced trauma, exploitation, or instability. For them, consistent, credible, and ethically grounded safeguarding is not a luxury but a lifeline.

Moreover, Harris Academy staff are tasked with delivering relationships and sex education (RSE). How can students be expected to navigate healthy boundaries when leadership models the opposite?

The issue is not whether Mr. Palmer is gay. The issue is whether someone who regularly posts sexually explicit, provocative, or age-inappropriate content online is fit to hold ultimate responsibility for child protection policy across a major academy trust.

In addition to be the Chair of Governors at Harris Academy—Alan holds another position as the Chair of LGBT Hero, a well-funded charity that runs community events in support of LGBTQ+ causes.

While his advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights is commendable, serious questions arise when examining the alignment between his public conduct and the professional responsibilities inherent in safeguarding children.

Most recently, LGBT Hero hosted an event titled “Forty & Beyond: High & Horny.” For the avoidance of doubt, the term “High & Horny” is widely recognised within LGBTQ+ health and support services as a euphemism for chemsex—a practice involving the use of drugs to facilitate prolonged sexual activity, primarily among men who have sex with men. This definition is explicitly confirmed by specialist providers such as the Birmingham Drug Project , which outlines the serious physical, psychological, and consent-related risks associated with chemsex, including impaired judgment, boundary violations, and exposure to blood-borne viruses.

A Call for Consistent Accountability

Safeguarding leadership must be held to the same standards regardless of gender, race, or sexual orientation. No identity should serve as a shield from professional accountability, especially when children’s safety is at stake.

If we truly believe in inclusion, it must include protection for every child, even—or especially—when it requires difficult conversations about power, behaviour, and responsibility.

These concerns were formally raised this morning Nov 17, 2025 with the Home Office, the Department for Education, Ofsted, and the Harris Federation.

Social workers hold immense power over families in England. From child protection and school safeguarding to foster care and mental health interventions, their judgments can reshape lives. Yet newly released data from Social Work England (SWE) shows that the profession’s demographic makeup diverges sharply from the population it serves, especially on questions of gender identity.

Of the 104,857 registered social workers in England, 6.4% identify as transgender or non-binary, more than 12 times the estimated 0.5% prevalence in the general UK population, according to Office for National Statistics (ONS) figures. Similarly, while 93.6% of the UK identifies as heterosexual, only 81.7% of social workers do—a gap of nearly 12 percentage points.1

These aren’t marginal differences. They suggest a profession that is demographically distinct in ways that could affect public confidence, particularly among families from conservative, religious, or culturally traditional backgrounds.

Why the gap matters

Social work has long prided itself on inclusivity and advocacy for marginalized groups. Many LGBTQ+ individuals are drawn to the field precisely because of their lived experience with discrimination. This may explain the profession’s higher representation of non-heterosexual and gender-diverse practitioners.

But when those tasked with making high-stakes decisions about children’s welfare, such as whether a child should be removed from a home or what support a school should provide, come from a demographic sliver that is vastly overrepresented compared to the national average, concerns about ideological alignment and cultural competence arise.

Transparency and trust

Equally notable is the fact that 12.1% of social workers declined to disclose their sexual orientation, compared to 7.5% in the general population. While this may reflect privacy preferences, it also raises questions about workplace culture and whether professionals feel pressure to conform to certain norms to succeed.2

The data itself is neutral, but its interpretation is not. High representation of any group isn’t inherently problematic. What matters is whether professional judgment remains evidence-based, child-centred, and respectful of diverse family structures and beliefs.

Yet in an era where gender identity debates permeate schools, healthcare, and youth services, the disproportionate presence of gender-diverse practitioners in a field that directly intervenes in family life warrants public scrutiny, not as a critique of identity, but as a safeguard for impartiality.

A call for clarity, not condemnation

No one is suggesting that transgender or LGBTQ+ social workers are unfit for their roles. On the contrary, their perspectives can be invaluable. But the scale of the disparity, particularly on gender identity, deserves serious examination by regulators, policymakers, and the public.

Are recruitment practices unintentionally filtering out candidates from more traditional backgrounds? Are parents from certain communities less likely to trust the system as a result? And crucially: are safeguarding decisions being made through a universally accepted child-welfare lens, or through frameworks influenced by evolving and contested ideological perspectives?

Social Work England should commission independent research into these questions. Families deserve a system that reflects the diversity of British society, not just in protected characteristics, but in worldview, culture, and belief.

Because when the professionals holding authority over our children look nothing like the population they serve, the burden of proving neutrality falls squarely on the profession itself.
